4 Dangers of Dehydration

Dehydration can come on quickly and become a serious issue faster than you may realize. Many of us don’t drink until we’re thirsty, but experts say that the body is already becoming dehydrated once you feel thirsty.

You should be drinking half your body weight (in ounces) each day, and start drinking water early in the day so you’re not drinking a lot before bedtime, which can cause you to wake up frequently throughout the night.

Even if you’re healthy, dehydration can cause problems, but if you already have certain medical conditions or chronic illnesses like diabetes, it can be even more dangerous. Bronx Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at four dangers of dehydration.

  1. Depression

You might not think that dehydration would affect you mentally, but the brain is made up of 85% water, which is more than any other organ in the body. When the brain doesn’t get enough water, it affects its energy supply, which can lead to fatigue and even symptoms of depression.

  1. Kidney Troubles

If not enough water is filtering through the kidneys, it can cause problems in how it functions as well as increase the likelihood of crystal formation. That can lead to an increase in kidney stones. Urine retention can also lead to kidney disease.

  1. High Blood Pressure

When the body’s cells lack water, the body sends a signal to the brain to produce a hormone that causes the blood vessels to constrict. This causes hypertension (high blood pressure) if it’s a chronic issue.

  1. Constipation

After food gets converted to waste in the small intestine, the body will extract water from that waste if it’s dehydrated. This causes the waste to harden, causing constipation.

How to Properly Take a Mental Health Day

Whether you’ve said it or a friend or co-worker said it, you’ve probably heard the following statement: “I need a mental health day.”

But how can you make sure that this day is spent refilling your tank and not unknowingly continuing to drain it?

Bronx Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at five tips to get the most out of your mental health day.

  1. Sleep In!

Not getting enough sleep regularly is one of the top reasons that we feel burnt out. While you do need to make sure you’re getting a consistent 7-9 hours of sleep each night, you can get things started on a new routine by not setting your alarm.

  1. Don’t Create a To-Do List

While this can work for some to work out their mental energies, it’s not suggested that you create a to-do list to accomplish. This is a rest day, and if you don’t accomplish what you set out to do, you will feel like the day wasn’t a successful one.

  1. Treat It Like a Sick Day

When you’re physically ill, you tend to stay in bed, read, watch TV, and generally be unproductive. This can also be a great way to spend a mental health day.

  1. Do Something You Enjoy

Conversely, if you feel better when you’re out and about, do something out of the house that you love. And this can also be a great time to enjoy a cheat meal or savory snack—this is your day, after all!

  1. Socialize

Schedule a lunch or dinner with a friend you don’t get to see that often due to your busy lives. Being with those we enjoy spending time with can be a great way to recharge our mental health.

Keep Your TV Costs Down After Switching to Streaming

Many people who cut the cable cord in exchange for a handful of streaming services may have found that it was actually easier to have cable—all of the channels they enjoyed in one place for one price.

But if paying for so many channels that you don’t watch isn’t something you want to do again, there are still some tips and tricks to manage the number of streaming services you subscribe to.

Bronx Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at four ways to keep your TV costs to less than what you were paying for cable.

  1. Bundle Up

Everyone’s TV viewing habits are different, so the site mybundle.tv may be a great place for you to start. The site will ask you questions to determine what type of programming you like to watch, what channels you enjoy, and more. The results will tell you the best streaming options for your TV preferences.

  1. Rotate Through Services

If you subscribe to the various streaming services just for the entertainment offerings, you can easily rotate among three or four. You can “binge” through the episodes you want to see for a month before switching services; by time the three or four months go by, that service you had likely will have new content that you can work your way through.

  1. Share Streaming Services

Most streaming providers will allow for multiple log-ins (standard Netflix plans allow for two, others are unlimited), so it makes sense to pair up with family or friends to subscribe to different services and share the credentials with the other person.

  1. Get Broadcast Networks for Free

The method is a little different than in the past, but digital antennas will still pick up major networks like NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX over the airwaves. This will allow you to get local and national news, weather, and many major sporting events without having to subscribe to any service.
